Two Ways to Build

Every project starts with the same question: who will update the site after it launches? Your answer decides which of these two approaches fits best.

Option A

WordPress: you're in the driver's seat

WordPress is the platform behind roughly 40% of the internet. I design and build your site, then hand you the keys. It has a visual editor — a bit like a word processor — so you can change text, swap photos, add new pages, or publish posts yourself, without touching any code.

  • Edit and grow the site on your own, whenever you want
  • Great fit if you post news, events, or articles regularly
  • A huge ecosystem of add-ons as your needs expand

The trade-off: It takes a little more to build and maintain, and hosting costs somewhat more, because there's more machinery under the hood.

Best for: Organizations that want to make their own updates and keep expanding the site over time.

Option B

Custom-coded: hand-built, fast, and low-maintenance

I write the site by hand using a modern tool called Astro — the same approach used for this site. There's no editing dashboard; the site is simply a set of very fast, very secure pages. When you want something changed, you send me the new text or photos and I make the update for you.

  • Loads noticeably faster and ranks well with search engines
  • Cheaper to host — often just a few dollars a month, sometimes free
  • Almost nothing to maintain, update, or break

The trade-off: Day-to-day edits go through me rather than a dashboard.

Best for: Sites that change occasionally — portfolios, small business pages, lab websites — where speed and simplicity matter more than self-editing.

Not sure which fits? That's normal — it's usually a five-minute conversation. Tell me about your project and I'll give you an honest recommendation, even if it's the cheaper option.
